Raised in Thunder Bay, Sarah is a 2Spirit and non-binary experimental media artist from Couchiching First Nation. She has been studying digital and film photography since 2014. Her specialty is portraiture, although hired services include family, couple, commercial, and event photography as well. In her personal work, Sarah focuses on photography and photographic mediums as language, using experimental techniques such as film soup to emphasize different messages in her work.
Recognizing the deep-rooted and complex socio-political issues faced by Indigenous peoples in Canada, Sarah is also driven to discuss and illuminate them in her work, not only artistically, but also professionally. Sarah has worked extensively in the arts community in Thunder Bay since 2016, including involvement in local collectives Neechee Studio, Fortify This, the Solidarity Collective, and most recently, Nefarious Film, a film photography community she co-established with her partner and friend Riley Urquhart. Her most recent exhibitions include works shown in regional artist-run centres such as the Co.Lab Gallery and Definitely Superior Art Gallery.
Sarah graduated from Lakehead University in 2020 with an HBA in English, and completed a Master of Arts in English there in 2022. Her experience in the field has allowed her to deepen her relationship with language, and thus her consideration of photographic mediums and artwork as language. She currently works as a resident curator at Co.Lab Gallery, located in Goods&Co Market in downtown Port Arthur.
